What a TikTok cover is
The cover — or thumbnail — is the still frame that shows on a profile grid and in search. Creators choose it when they post, often adding a title in big letters. It is the single biggest reason someone taps a video from a profile, and on search results it decides whether your video gets the click or the one next to it does.
Why creators save covers
- Plan your grid. Line up your last 12 covers to see if your profile looks consistent.
- Build a portfolio. Agencies and brands want to see the covers of your best videos, not just links.
- Study what works. Compare the covers of a creator's most-viewed videos to see which text and faces pull clicks.
- Reports and articles. Journalists and marketers use covers to illustrate a trend — with credit.
Making better covers from what you learn
When you collect covers from successful videos in your niche, patterns show quickly: a face looking at the camera, three to five words of large text, and high contrast against the background. Keep the important text in the middle third of the frame, because profile grids crop the top and bottom. Use your findings for inspiration — never copy another creator's cover design.
Size and format
Covers come as JPEG images in the same 9:16 frame as the video, usually 720 × 1280 or larger. For a sharper still, pause the full video at the moment you want in any player and take a frame instead — download the MP4 in 1080p first.
